Travelling abroad soon?

If you are getting ready to travel abroad, don’t forget to check with your Occupational Health Care Professional or www.cdc.gov to see if you will need any immunizations.  You probably knew that measles has been eliminated from the United States. But did you know that we are one of the few countries?  In the United Kingdom 1,279 suspected measles cases have already been reported in 2012. With the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London it will be easy to spread.  There is more than just measles out there that you could catch. Some immunizations take a few rounds to become effective, so plan ahead!

Lightning Strikes

Did you know that an estimated 24,000 people are killed by lightning strikes around the world each year and about 240,000 are injured?  In the United States, it is the #2 weather killer (second only to floods).  In the US, between 9% and 10% of those struck die, for an average of 40 to 50 deaths per year.  The affects of even being close to a strike can be frightening.  One night, my husband (who used to be an aircraft mechanic) and a co-worker were connecting the lines to refill the water tanks on a plane that was getting ready to be put back in service.  Lighting struck the hanger, then connected to the plane and promptly exited close to where they were standing. The shock blew both of them back 15 – 20 feet!  Luckily they only had some scrapes and bruises, it certainly could have been a lot worse. Please stay safe out there in the summer storms. We have found a couple applications for you Iphone/Ipad to help you stay informed when weather is approaching.
