Lightning Strikes

Did you know that an estimated 24,000 people are killed by lightning strikes around the world each year and about 240,000 are injured?  In the United States, it is the #2 weather killer (second only to floods).  In the US, between 9% and 10% of those struck die, for an average of 40 to 50 deaths per year.  The affects of even being close to a strike can be frightening.  One night, my husband (who used to be an aircraft mechanic) and a co-worker were connecting the lines to refill the water tanks on a plane that was getting ready to be put back in service.  Lighting struck the hanger, then connected to the plane and promptly exited close to where they were standing. The shock blew both of them back 15 – 20 feet!  Luckily they only had some scrapes and bruises, it certainly could have been a lot worse. Please stay safe out there in the summer storms. We have found a couple applications for you Iphone/Ipad to help you stay informed when weather is approaching.
